George Wallace vowing "segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever." That April, Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested and wrote "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," and in June NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers was gunned down outside his home in Mississippi.
On August 28th, hundreds of thousands gathered for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Less than a month later, four young girls were killed when a bomb exploded at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. In November, Malcolm X delivered his "Message to the Grass Roots" speech.

Yesterday, on September 11, as the world remembered the dreadful terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington,
DC 12 years ago, it is time also to remember that, in its response to those attacks, the US embarked on a dangerous flight from the law that led to the use of torture and indefinite detention without charge or trial. At Guantanamo and Bagram, these policies have, to this day, left hundreds of men stranded without access to justice.
