Texas, Georgia execute intellectually disabled death row inmates

Texas, Georgia execute intellectually disabled death row inmates
The US Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that US states could not execute the "mentally retarded." That court precedent, however, did not stop Georgia and Texas from carrying out the executions this week of two inmates with clearly demonstrated intellectual disabilities. The high court allowed the executions to proceed, refusing to issue a stay in both cases.

A poem by Simin Behbahani

Not one, not two ...they were five

Not one, not two ...they were five and yet I don't know why
In my mind, they were more like fifty.
And, how is it possible that gallows [on which they were hanged]
Were, someday, trees that did not surrender to axes?

Tell me how to write about the treehood days of the gallows:
Standing firm for freedom, they dug their heels in the meadow.
When the breeze found them in the orchard and wrapped itself
around their branches
Their message reached everyone in soft playful dances.

Now, heads have grown on them, heads hanging
from broken necks,
Heads of full-bodied figures, perhaps champions
in their own way.
Left waiting, feet-dangling-in-the-air, utterly
robbed of their words,
These heads whose stories could have filled many books!
Only clouds could now rain tears on their broken bodies,
For mothers were not united with them even after their death.

Don't waste a complaint on the faithless judge, who
Was the enemy, not of darkness and tyranny,
but of the Giver of life.

- Simin Behbahani -

Join Us in DC 1.11.15 - Close Guantanamo

Join Us in DC 1.11.15

Join the Witness Against Torture community as we gather in Washington, DC to remember the opening of the prison camp
in Guantánamo. This January 11th, 2015, marks the beginning of 14 years of torture and indefinite detention. Right now, 136 men remain, half of whom have been cleared for release but remain held without charge or trial. The administration will not disclose how many of them continue to hunger strike and how many are force-fed.

We celebrate the freedom of those recently released.
Yet, we must continue to pressure the Obama administration
to fulfill its promise to finally shut down the prison and charge
or release all those detained.

Mario Cuomo a Rare Voice Against the Death Penalty in Tough on Crime Era

Mario Cuomo a Rare Voice Against the Death Penalty in Tough on Crime Era
The progressive legacy of former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who died Thursday at the age of 82, spans many milestones, from calling out President Ronald Reagan's “City on a Hill” to expanding health care. His consistent opposition to the death penalty was especially notable, given the tough-on-crime rhetoric that reigned during much
of his career. Over the course of his governorship, he vetoed 12 bills that would have reinstated the death penalty in the state – one for every year he was in office.
