Atheism remains one of the most extreme taboos in Saudi Arabia. It is a red line that no one may cross. Regarded on a par with terrorists, atheists in Saudi Arabia suffer imprisonment, marginalisation, slander, ostracisation and even execution. Syrian sculptor Nizar Ali Badr has been capturing the story of refugees from his country, using pebbles from his local beach. His art has become the inspiration for a unique film -- the concept of Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer, who asked Georgian animator Sandro Kancheli to bring the stone figures to life along with his music.

Today, July 1, we are commemorating 150 years of the Abolition of the Death Penalty in Portugal.
We have become the first sovereign nation in Europe to cease capital punishment and also one of the first in the world to do so. The Abolition was made in stages: for political crimes in 1852, for all crimes, except the military, in July 1, 1867.
Portugal last execution took place in April 22, 1846 (by hanging).
note ► Grand Duchy of Tuscany abolished the death penalty in November 30, 1786. Venezuela was the first country in the world to abolish death penalty in 1863, followed by San Marino in 1865.
