On Mahmoud Darwish ♥ 79th Birthday

❝ Here, at the mercy of time,
on these foothills at sunset
near ripped-up orchards stripped of their shadows,
we do what prisoners do,
we do what the unemployed do:
we cultivate hope.

❝ We are alone. We are alone to the point
of drunkenness with our own aloneness,
with the occasional rainbow visiting.

- Mahmoud Darwish -
